Experience or Enthusiasm?

I’ve hired hundreds of sales people over my career, and only on a handful of occasions have I known with absolute certainty that the person in front of me is the perfect candidate.

Hiring the right, or wrong, salespeople can make or break your business, influencing its growth, revenue, and customer satisfaction. In my experience, one of the fundamental balances to strike revolves around the significance of experience versus enthusiasm in potential sales hires.

In this article, we’ll dive into that balance and consider how both factors play a crucial role in shaping a successful sales team.

Experience: The Backbone of Expertise

Pros - Proven Track Record: Experienced sales professionals should come with a proven, referenceable track record of success. Their prior achievements, closed deals, and customer relationships can be indicative of their ability to perform and contribute to your success.

Industry Knowledge: Experience often brings in-depth industry knowledge and understanding, enabling salespeople to navigate complexities, communicate effectively, and position their products or services competently. Their time to productivity is usually shorter which can be a significant benefit.

Confidence and Maturity: Experienced salespeople tend to exude confidence and maturity in their approach. They are well-versed in handling objections, negotiation, and conflict resolution, making them valuable assets in challenging sales scenarios.

Cons - Resistance to Change: Seasoned professionals may be set in their ways, resistant to adopting new strategies, technologies, or approaches that could potentially enhance their performance and adaptability in a changing market.

Cost of Experience: Hiring experienced professionals can be cost-prohibitive due to their salary expectations and bonus structures, which could strain your budget, especially for smaller enterprises.

Enthusiasm: The Catalyst for Growth

Pros - Eager Learners: Enthusiastic individuals are eager to learn and grow with your business. They often exhibit a hunger for knowledge, which, when coupled with training and mentorship, can rapidly develop their sales acumen.

Drive and Passion: Enthusiasm brings an unparalleled drive and passion for achieving targets and exceeding expectations. This infectious energy can boost team morale, fostering a positive work environment.

Adaptability: Enthusiastic salespeople are typically more adaptable to change and open to embracing new sales strategies, technologies, and methodologies. This flexibility is crucial in the ever-evolving landscape of sales.

Cons - Potential Skill Gap: Enthusiastic hires might lack the practical experience and industry knowledge needed to navigate complex sales scenarios effectively. This could lead to a longer learning curve and delayed results.

Risk of Burnout: The high energy and zeal of enthusiastic salespeople, if not managed properly, could lead to burnout or fatigue over time, impacting their long-term productivity and effectiveness.

Striking the Balance: The Ideal Approach

Of course, in reality, the ideal scenario lies in striking a balance between experience and enthusiasm. A synergistic blend of both can create a powerhouse of a sales team. There are ways to create that environment as your sales team expands, here's some pointers:

  1. Structured Onboarding and Training: Provide thorough onboarding and ongoing training programs to enthusiastic hires, supplementing their enthusiasm with industry knowledge and sales skills.

  2. Mentorship and Guidance: Pair enthusiastic newcomers with experienced mentors to benefit from their wisdom and gain practical insights into successful sales strategies.

  3. Performance-Based Culture: Cultivate a performance-driven culture that encourages both experienced and enthusiastic salespeople to strive for excellence while recognizing and rewarding their achievements.

  4. Continuous Learning and Development: Encourage all sales team members, regardless of experience level, to engage in continuous learning and development, ensuring that they stay updated with industry trends and best practices.

That Perfect Candidate? A harmonious blend….

That handful of perfect candidates I saw? They had a blend of both elements. Experience provides the foundation, knowledge, and confidence, while enthusiasm injects the energy, adaptability, and drive needed to keep the sales engine running at full throttle. The key is to recognize the value that each brings to the table and strategically integrate them to foster a high-performing, motivated sales team poised for success in the dynamic world of sales.
